Would radios work after a global apocalypse?
If a nuclear war destroyed almost all of the big cities in the US, would a person be able to get or send out a message through a radio or a walkie talkie? Or would radio towers have to be rebuilt? If radios didn't work, how hard would it be to get AM or FM frequencies up again?
Researching for a novel. Thanks!
Nuclear explosions release electromagnetic pulses that wipe out all electronic devices within some range of the explosion. The only protection from this is to disconnect radios from everything -- power, antennas, earth ground, everything -- and hope for the best. Even this isn't sufficient if you're close to the blast.
(Did you see Ocean's 11? They used an artificial pulse to do something similar. The movie didn't explain how such a device could take down the power grid without wiping out the computers and radios Ocean's team relied on, but that's the idea anyway.)
If there were radios that were not damaged by the blast, there's nothing to get "up". You'd just turn them on and they'd transmit. If there was an undamaged receiver in range it would receive. You'd need power and an antenna. Depending on the radio you might be talking about batteries and a little 10"-12" antenna or a 120V generator and a wire antenna in the 30' - 130' range.
Old vacuum tube radios are less susceptible to these pulses. You'd most likely see Ham Radio operators back on the air within minutes -- using radios from the 50's and 60's.
I just read an article about this in QST magazine. You might be able to get some help from the American Radio Relay League at www.arrl.org. Or find a Ham Radio operator. ARRL is a good source for your writing project.
