Yaesu ft-857d cannot access local repeater? 2?
Ok here's my problem I have a yaesu ft-857d which is connected to a 3 element portable yagi (there is an bnc to N-type adaptor in use). Although all of the settings are ok shifts tones etc. i cannot access my local repeater. Note that I can access it using my HT vx-6 so there is no problem with the repeater. I dont have a SWR meter so i cannot check it. Also note that the reception of the ft-857d is OK but it seems that there is a problem with the transmission. It doesnt make sense tha repeater is just 1 km away and in line of sight (no buildings or anything else). What may be causing this? Is it the adaptor i use? The antenna is designed for use with HT so it has a BNC connector.
My GOD.. I can remember you had to actually KNOW something about electronics to get a HAM LICENSE.
You can use anything for receiving... EVEN A DEAD SHORT will work as an antenna for receiving... but you need a REAL antenna to transmit or the protection circuit in the RF output stage of the transmitter WILL SHUT IT DOWN if you try to transmit into a low resistance load.
Try making a short vertical antenna out of a clothes hanger. Divide 5555 by the frequency you are trying to transmit on and that will give you the wavelength in inches... then you can divide that by half to give you a working length you can cut the clothes hanger or wire to. At just 1 km, with the Tx on LOW POWER you should easily be able to hit the repeater... and if you can.. then you know your problem is that shi**y antenna hookup you have dreamed up.
